Fall Lesson Schedule: Sign-ups Posted!!
It's hard to believe that back-to-school and Fall Lesson schedules are right around the corner! Back to school brings us new lesson schedules for trainers and riders alike. Please check with your trainer's schedule of availability for the fall, and which days are most convenient for you/your child to lesson, when is the earliest & latest you can lesson, and if you prefer privates or groups. The trainers will contact you to finalize the day and lesson time for the fall schedule. Please Note: The trainers will do their best to accommodate your schedule; however, with 200+ students we cannot guarantee everyone's preferred day & time but will do our best.

Riding Tip of the Month

Crops: Their Purpose and the Proper Way to Use Them

Crops are used often in horseback riding. They act as an extension of your arm or leg in order to reinforce your commands. If you’re riding a lazy horse, you may want a crop to help get them moving. Hold the crop in your dominant hand (unless your horse likes to cut corners and veer away from the fence; then you may want to hold it in your inside hand) and gently tap the horse behind your leg. You should only tap a horse with a crop if they have ignored your previous commands. Crops are only used as a last resort if your horse isn’t listening to you, and should never be used to punish or intentionally hurt the horse. If you are whacking your horse and leaving marks on them, you are hitting them too hard. Horses may also associate the overuse of a crop with something they are frightened of. For example, if your horse is afraid to cross a stream, and you are continuously whipping them with a crop, it will probably only make them even more afraid of the stream, and next time, they will be even more reluctant. Crops are a great tool to help make your horse obey you, but should only be used as a reinforcement, not a punishment.

School Horse of Month

Belle (aka Southern Bell) is a 13 year old, 11.1 hand, Welsh pony mare. Bay in color, Belle has a star and snip on her face, 3 white pasterns, and 1 white coronet. Before becoming a school horse at Saddleback, Belle was owned by another riding barn up in the Northeast. During her time there, Belle was used as a school horse, where she won several ribbons in the short/long stirrup division, including blues, and even competed in the Devon horse show! Her previous owners purchased her after her school horse days as more of a leadline horse for their two young daughters. Being a military family, they moved around a lot and sweet Belle always went with them. But, when it came time for the family to move to Fort Sill, Belle sadly needed a new home. We found her and knew she would be a perfect fit at Saddleback when her owners told us she would stand completely still and quiet in the cross ties while the two daughters painted her hooves with nail polish!

From there, Saddleback took her on as a lesson horse, retrained her to be a school horse again, and not just for the flat, but also for jumping lessons. Belle has been a pleasure to have at  Saddleback Equestrian. She’s taught many young riders the basics, taken a few over their first fences, and continues to be a favorite among all ages. Belle is currently available for lessons, short/long stirrup showing, and lease options.

Riding Tip Corner

IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE RIBBONS.

As fall show season is quickly approaching, a good reminder for all riders is this - it’s not just about the ribbons. The goal for most, if not all, riders is to leave a horse show with only blue, or first place, ribbons in hand. However, shows have so much more to offer than just shiny blue ribbons. Competing in horse shows can help you and your horse develop confidence, gain show experience, and learn what you can improve on for the next time you’re in the ring. Shows can be nerve-racking for riders of all ages and the only way to overcome the show day “jitterbugs” is to become confident in the ring. You might be overwhelmed by the more-experienced riders, the schooling ring packed with trainers yelling and everyone doing their own thing, or maybe even the thought of riding without your trainer walking you through every step of the way scares you. These fears, however, help develop deeper bonds and trust between horse and rider. When you’re afraid of all that a show entails, you have to trust that your horse will take care of you, and they learn the same from you. Creating this bond between you and your horse also helps both of you to feel more confident in the show ring. All the little details become less “scary” and you begin to relax, knowing what to expect, and that all you can give is your best. There are many factors that go into how well, and if, you place in a class or division. You are only in control of your attitude and actions throughout the show day. You can do numerous horse shows, performing consistently throughout the season, and still place all across the board. The overall placings are up to the judge. Instead of deciphering why you didn’t get first place for that one class or division from the show, try sitting down and talking with your trainer about what you did well in each round and where you can improve for the next round or horse show.

School Horse of Month

Sunny Delight, aka Sunny, is an 18 year old, 16 hand, sweet natured gelding that has won the hearts of many! Buckskin colored with dorsal stripe and black points, his registered name is Hold Me Down--double registered with both International Buckskin Association and Appaloosa Horse Club. In his earliest years, Sunny earned huge points in 2 year old lunge line events. He then did eventing up to 3'6" (jumping/cross country), dressage, and competed in Appaloosa and Buckskin shows--with World Champion points. He also competed very successfully in trail classes, hunter under saddle, numerous jumping events, and even worked cattle in Stillwater.

In his teenage years, Sunny became a part of the sweet Higinbotham family that loved him tremendously for many years, showing him successfully in both hunters & equitation. After selling their property w/land they boarded Sunny at SaddleBack Equestrian. Over the years he taught "his girl" many things helping her move up to higher jumping levels and develop into a great rider while always taking care of her. Eventually he grew older needing to step down from higher fences as she continued to move up. It was very hard hard for them to let this sweet soul go, but knowing he'd be well-cared for, available to ride and watch teach others, they kindly donated him to SaddleBack's lesson program. Our staff and patrons fell in love, and he quickly became a favorite amongst many lesson students. Recently due to some arthritic discomfort, SaddleBack & the Higinbotham family semi-retired him to 50 acres with his new owner, Allie. This kind soul taught many why we fall in love with horses and their gentle spirits, and we have no doubt he'll enjoy his semi-retirement teaching the new littlest ones how to ride!

Riding Tip Corner

Show season is in full swing! Just like any other sport, horse shows require physical and mental preparation with the end goal to perform our best and yet make the best of it at the same time. Most shows need a lot of paperwork such as proof of negative coggins, registration and membership papers. Thankfully you have your head trainer/owner of SaddleBack who keeps the essential paperwork and supplies required for every horse show. A lot of supplies such as shipping halters, buckets, hay, feed, groom kits, medicine kits, tack, etc. are other items the horse trailer is stocked with to ensure things go smoothly. However, here are some things riders should bring:

  • Brushes and combs
  • Hoof pick
  • Towels/rags to remove dust & polish tack
  • Show Sheen
  • Baby wipes
  • Fly spray
  • Treats
  • Tack (Saddle, saddle pad, bridle, girth, etc)
  • Boots, show coat, extra show breeches and show shirt, helmet, hair nets, hair pins

Parents, family, and friends can do their part by making it a fun, family/friend event by saving the date, becoming familiar with the rules of the classes and divisions, dusting off boots/gear, providing water/drinks as needed, & being a positive support as competition is always stressful for the rider, horse, and trainer. Bring extra cash for food/drinks, lawn chairs if outdoors, sunscreen, and most of all fun & laughter! Laughter is the best medicine and our barn family always enjoys good company during show days! Looking forward to seeing you at the next show!
